Lordy

This month is going to wind up killing me.

As you can tell by the post below, there are things that need to be cooked up, and yet I need to find the time to get all the ingredients together, the right kind of bowl, and then back out to the grocery store because I ran out of something.

Well, horrible analogies aside, things are getting way busier than I anticipated, and I just cannot keep up with commenting daily on everyone's blogs. I like to leave witty comments and I find myself just flying through and doing "thumbs up" sort of comments like "that's great!" and "so cute" and I hate doing that. So unless I have some time to devote to commenting, I will only come by when I can truly read what you are writing, because all of your blogs deserve that type of attention. But really, I am reading them, and I stil love all of them.

There are only so many hours in the day, and right now I have to concentrate on the things that pay the bills. Sadly, this blog isn't one of them. Oh, how I wish it was.

But, with my other endeavor, I have come to realize why my Technorati rating sucks. I have never really been the type to care about those things, and I am grateful for all the readers I have. But the weird thing is that I see all these supposedly very highly ranked blogs, and they get like, 3 comments a post or something.

Which I so don't get. I know there are ways to "game" the system, but I truly do not have the time or energy to do so.

Uh, except the person who pays me? He is kinda concerned about it. Therefore, I must be concerned about it.

Boo.

Boo Indeed!
But I completely understand. I've been having to use the ol'rss feed to keep up on the blogs and I don't always have time to actually stop in to comment (of course since you don't have full set on your rss feed I HAVE to come by).

Thumbs up! That's great!

Seriously, you should check out g's (Crinkled: http://newwrinkle.blogspot.com/) new "guidelines." I'm going to be noting them tomorrow. I'm with you on feeling frantic about wanting to leave thoughtful -- or at least witty -- comments, but it's sometimes too much. And I don't even do anything for a living. I shall make sure I start checking out your playing gig. Scout's Honor!

I don't know how the Technorati thing works either, though I get a secret thrill when my number has increased because I know it's for real because I'm too stupid to dupe the system. So, people like me, they really really like me!

Ummmmm, have a blog whoring contest like I did and get a zillion comments and just temporarily prostitute yourself long enough to make the boss happy???? Idea???

Hey, I don't even know what a Technorati rating is, but if you think it's something, it truly must be.

I've read some of those comments on so-called big blogs, and most of them seem to be a race for who is first. I also don't get how some of them are so highly rated and yet they post only once or twice a month. Weird. I get the heebie-jeebies if I go too long without posting!

I am sorry that your boss is getting worried. I very much enjoy your other blog. I just think that it needs a little time to prove to everyone that it will be consistently a quality read.

A lot of us are in the same situation, Gina, so don't worry. It would be great to sit all day and develop my blog into something widely read and treasured by dozens and dozens of people AND make money at it, but that just isn't the case.

Go earn your keep.

I don't understand the whole technorati thing either. Since there's no way my blog is going to make me money, I choose to ignore it. ;)

Good luck getting some dollars from the other blog, though!

I can't figure out what a good rating is! They certainly don't explain it much.

I've noticed the "high ratings/low comments" thing as well. I have my blog stats and know what people are coming to my neck of the woods for (i.e., pictures of High School Musical), so, like you, I'm grateful for the readers I do have and really have no interest in gaming the system to make it look like I have more readers than I really do.

Well, I just re-read that post, and I in no way meant to imply that my boss wants me to game the system. He does care about Technorati ratings, though, which was the real point of that last part.

I have never understood technorati or alexa.

Silliness if you ask me.

I know some sites rely on those ratings for better barganing power on their ads, but as far as I am concerned, the only reliable stats are those from a source like google analytics.

Sorry Gina. I didnt mean to imply you are silly. I just meant that you're right, people try to game those systems and it's not an accurate representation of readership.

I am going to have to find out what a Technorati rating is, as soon as I have time. I don't have time to comment all the time either, but I do appreciate my lurkers too.

My technorati rating sucks. I don't know how to get it higher either. I tried to. I think you have to get on some chain list or something, so your name pops up a lot on the internet.

You're entertaining! So leave it at that. :) Don't worry about the silly ratings, unless that is what you are after.

I leave quick comments too. Not to upset anyone, but to let them know I am reading. I'd like to leave everyone an essay, but I'm usually very quiet. :)

I hate when that happens, but it happens to the best of us. Hang in there Gina. ;)

The blogging business is hard work whether it's writing posts or commenting.

Technorati "authority" isn't that hard of a concept to understand. I tried my best to explain it at Pole Hill awhile back:

Your Technorati Authority number is simply the number of unique blogs that have linked to you in the last six months. So if fifty different blogs link to you in that time frame, you have an authority of 50. But if only one blog links to you 50 times, your Technorati Authority number is one. Mostly what Authority tells you is how much your fellow bloggers like you. It doesn't give you much insight into who's actually reading. I know blogs with far more traffic than mine with lower authority. Also, I have more traffic than some blogs I know of with two and three times the authority.

You've seen those memes that are just basically chains of links to other blogs going around. That's one of the more effective ways of gaming the system.

Your employer is concerned with selling advertising, as is anybody involved in commercial media. The problem is that there's no reliable way of determining who's reading, nothing in the blogosphere comparable to Nielsen ratings. Technorati, as I implied above, doesn't tell you that much. Comments, like Technorati, are only a guide to how well-liked you are by your peers. Your hit counter can be misleading, since if you're like me, half your traffic is coming from errant Google searches, and they're not staying to read anything. Page views may be more reliable, since that shows you that somebody's reading something.

Hope that helps.

What is it with kids and their need to eat? Above all else, we have to pay those damn bills.

I only found out about Technorati last week...I went and signed up and was so dismayed by the notion that I have no authority that I will never go back. One thing I do not need is another reason to question my selfworth--that's what my mother is for!

I had no idea you have another blog. I am heading over to check it out.

I love your blog--this blog-- and it is in my Favorites Section...a place where I am the ultimate authority.
