Tuck It

So I think the feminist debate should forget the Mommy Wars and go after the burgeoning popularity of vaginal and labial plastic surgery.

I can honestly say that never thought I would ever in my life write a sentence like that!

A story in the LA Times today wrote about women who have various surgeries to "enhance" the look of their uh, outer and inner sexual areas. From tightening of the vagina to "tucking" the labia, these women take a look at porn stars and think there is something wrong with them. That they aren't attractive enough. Down there. And apparently they want it fixed.

There are quotes from two women saying that after their surgeries, they felt more sexually confident. That they could now turn on the lights when being intimate with their partners. Now I have a body that is far from perfection, but even I don't demand a total black out.

I am going to venture to say that perhaps the problems go a bit deeper than if your labia majora is sucked of its excess fat. Anybody getting queasy yet? I think I am. Anyhoo, supposedly these procedures and ones similar to them have been done for many years to repair damage from childbirth and sex change surgery. Only lately have women been coming in and demanding the same look as the June Playboy centerfold.

Exactly how far will we go to seek "perfection?" Not to mention that many of these porn stars and such are airbrushed to within an inch of their lives. With technology as it is, most of those women probably dont' even look half as good in real life. And that is even saying that what they look like is the personification of "good." Perhaps we should take up the cause of intact and natural women's organs.

I can't wait to see the searches that land people here after this post.

And I think I have used more quotation marks per line than in any previoius post.

Celebrate diversity, says I.

I've heard of this, very faintly, and assumed that it was guys who were doing this type of thing. Whodathunkit?

This post is worthless without pictures... tee hee.

Interesting topic, however. Can't see such a procedure being important to me, but to each their own?

Wow, I never heard of such a thing! Is it a California trend that will eventually trickle east?

I just don't see the point if it's purely cosmetic. I can understand women wanting to "tighten up" after having several children though.

What is wrong with people? I just don't get it. At all. I think you are absolutely right when you say that a desire to have this kind of procedure reflects some much more serious issues.

It worries me when I can read something like this and not be surprised.
Serious issues. Damn right. But you know that when women want to get plastic bags of saline forced into their breasts to have a better cleavage theat something is wrong.
It's all about how we see ourselves. Unfortunately, from the time we first learn language as infants we are given messages about who we are. Some are correct and some outright lies. We lose our authentic self as soon as others tell us who we are.
In nature, it is the males who preen, I'm not sure why women are doin the dance. I am a Phenominal Woman in my eyes, and that all that counts.Maya Angelo wrote a poem about the natural beauty of women coming from their attitudes, morals and deeds.
Sorry for the essay you hit a sore spot.

Hope, you mentioned Maya Angelou's poem...one of my all-time favorites!

Although it makes for a funny story... I really can't help feeling sorry for the women who feel like they have to alter the appearance of their labia to feel better about themselves. Is that what it has come to? YIKES!!

Eeeewwwww. I don't want to see this. Makes me wonder, do they get to choose from a set of pictures... Oh dear. I just don't know honey. Which coochey do you think would look best on me?

I wouldn't even know what to feel inferior about. I mean, women with fake boobs, I know that means I should feel bad about my boobs not being big enough. But what the hell does a perfect vulva look like? Jesus Christ on a popcicle stick, this world is wild at heart and weird on top.

Wow...what defines the perfect labia anyway? I guess I'm not really that shocked. It throws an interesting light on how all trends in beauty are determined. Who gets to decide this stuff? It is a scary world my daughters are just stepping into.

All I can say is...Nothing surprises me anymore. I've even heard of people getting plastic surgery for their pets. Scary to say the least.

Now I have something new to worry about.

My tweens already look at themselves in th mirror and frown. I wonder how long it will take for them to discover this?

Sure, to each her own, but this is nuts.

I heard about this not long ago on Entertainment Tonight, or Access Holywood, or one of those shows.

Combine that with the toe amputation surgery people are having to fit into itsy bitsy pointy shoes and I don't know if we can even call it "cosmetic" surgery anymory. Disfiguration seems a bit more like it.

Eww!
