I Have Turned Into a Crack Whore, Thanks to My So-Called "Friends"
So like many people I know, I have a bit of a weakness for chocolate. The way I avoid this character flaw is to simply not keep chocolate in the house. That way, I have no temptations to eat any, and I have yet to have a craving strong enough to send me out of the house in search of a Snickers.
We had a park and dinner date with some very old friends of ours this weekend. We figured we would let our kids build up an appetite playing on the swings, and then head off for a great little Mexican place not too far from here.
We had a wonderful time and we had already hugged our goodbyes and were heading to the car. As I was loading up Mr. Personality, I noticed J walking toward us with a box in his hand. "J wanted to give this to you," he said. "Oh, thanks!" I replied, and took the box.
I immediately knew what it was.
"Oooooooh nooooo, J, we don't need this!" I wailed at him as he made his way back.
He just grinned and waved.
You see, it was a two pound box of See's Candy specifically the Nuts and Chews.
If there is anything that is close to crack for me, it is that particular brand and type of candy.
Have you ever had this stuff? I have seen tv shows where they will do blind taste tests with See's against Godiva, Ethel M, Teuschers, and other boutique brands of chocolate. The winner is always See's. I have had many types of chocolate, including the three mentioned above, but there is nothing better in my humble opinion. It is silky and sweet, with none of the bitter tannin taste that some of the higher end chocolates tend to have.
This brand of candy is a long tradition here in Southern California, although they do have stores in other states. I have been the recipient of See's candy for pretty much my entire life, and my mom always buys us Easter chocolate from there even to this day. And everyone around here has had their suckers. Everyone.
As this box of candy was a gift, I couldn't exactly hand it back.
And I was too weak to give the box to someone else.
You don't even want to know how much is left. Or not left, as the case may be.

We can only buy See's in Virginia during the holiday season. They set up one of those carts in the middle of the mall. Their employees dress in a variation of what could be a French maid's outfit but could just as easily be a nurse's suit.
They hand out free samples. I heart free samples.
