Something to Think About

So if you are in a pensive mood, go ahead and read this.

Why is it viewed as such a horrible thing by some people that the government help people? With the push by the religious right to incorporate religious principles into government, wouldn't helping the poor go front and center? I thought that is what Jesus was all about, helping the least of our brothers. Love thy neighbor as thyself. Yet all these resources go into teaching creationism in schools, while poverty-stricken families go without medical care. I just don't understand.

Text from Matthew

# Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
# Blessed are the meek: for they shall posses the land.
# Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted.
# Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill.
# Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
# Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God.
# Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
# Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Apparently, you can only do specific Christian things in the government. You can fight abortion rights, you can try to teach creationism, you can try to outlaw same-sex marriages, but the poor and disadvantaged are not even on the radar.

Seriously, I don't understand.

This is one of the reasons why I love my Country so much. Our government just wont let you starve. I know we're often critized about our our socialism here, but we have a society that allows people who need a bit of assistance to thrive.

I do not get it, either. It makes me so sad and angry.

It is completely hypocritical and infuriating. Like you, I don't understand at all, and I challenge ANYONE who holds those beliefs, to explain it to me.

I don't get American politics either. Where I come from, probably most Christians are left-wing, not right-wing. They certainly agree with helping the poor and disadvantaged, and approving of governments who increase social help. Purely moral issues such as abortion or gay rights are not considered party political; they're voted on according to conscience by individuals across each party.

America needs more folks who think like you.

I couldn't agree more, Gina. Somewhere along the lines, I think the religious right lost the truth of Jesus' words in their own obsessions with certain issues.
