Friday Poll

Do you think books will become extinct in our children's lifetime?

And by extinct, I mean that there would be no production of new ones.

Oh - please god - NO!!! I LOVE books! You just can't replace the tactile pleasure of holding a book with the sterile feel of an electronic one.

But seriously, I don't really think so. I think we have too much sentimental attachment to them. And if my office clutter is any indication, we now have MORE paper to deal with rather than less.

NO WAY. I love that my daughter is old school and would still rather by a CD then download everything. I agree with what Heather said :)

I can see major metro newspapers going bye-bye by the time my grandchildren arrive on the scene. But no way books will go away.

Of course, that's a fervent hope rather than any blatant knowledge.

I agree with Heather as well, there is nothing like the feel of a book in your hands.... besides unless they develop waterproof/ sand proof electronics, no way people will give up bathtub and beach reading.

No, certainly not.

When I was a child, someone said that would happen by the time I was an adult... bizarrely, as there was no Internet or anything similar in those days. But book production increases every year, so it seems very unlikely it would ever stop.

I certainly hope not, also. I agree with the others, there's nothing like holding a book.

When I was in third grade, my Weekly Reader said that oranges would one day soon be replaced with juice-laden disks due to constant weather-related problems in Florida and California, not to mention ever-evolving pest problems. I was devastated. That thought plagued me for months. That was back in 1968 or so.

I hope oranges--and books--keep sticking around for a long, long time.

There will always be books. Although so much literature has migrated to the internets, people will always want something they can hold in their hands, something they know is theirs.
