It's a Love/Hate Thing

So when I think of my favorite stores, I tend to overlook one in particular. I don't know why, since I go there at least twice a month. I also almost always manage to drop at least 200 bucks when shopping there. I do get excited when I enter, there are so many items to choose from, and I never know exactly what items they are going to have.

Yes, Costco is my friend.

The largest of the so-called "big box" stores, Costco has been my family's best bosom buddy for a long time. Where else can you pick up 150 diapers, a pound of cheese, fresh flowers, and a lawnmower? All at pretty decent prices, I might add.

There are two things to watch for when shopping at Costco. One is, don't get carried away with buying a bunch of stuff when you don't know if you have room for it. Yes, it is tempting to buy a pack of 12 rolls of paper towels. When is there not a need for paper towels in our lives? But where the heck are these things going to go in the meantime? I cannot say how much of our storage space is taken up by extra cans of shaving cream and disposable razors.

The second thing being, if you see it, you have to buy it. You never know if it is going to be there when you come back the next time. I learned this lesson the hard way. I needed some tennis shoes, but I wasn't sure if I should get the particular ones they had. So, I didn't purchase them. Lo and behold, they didn't have any tennis shoes for months afterwards, and I was forced to buy a pair elsewhere for more money.

I am quite aware that the two things above are incompatible. Don't buy so much stuff/you gotta buy it when you see it. Thus my love/hate relationship with Costco. Hmmmm, they did have a big storage shed the other day, I bet it could fit in our patio...

I just read an article which stated how much better employees were treated at Costco compared to Sams: more money, better benefits etc.

I'm still trying to figure out what to do with 24 cans of pasta sauce. I don't remember the last time we even ate pasta...

If the costco wasn't such a freaking crowded nightmare, I would go more often. But lugging the kids and fighting through the crowds, just to have to find room for 36 cans of tuna fish when we get home . ..though we do need to get our yearly supply of paper products!

You and my super-shopping friend Tina have much in common.

We don't have a Costco in our city, so we have only been in one a couple of times when we go to visit our daughter. I must say that I feel overwhelmed in that store. I walk around with my mouth open and eyes full of wonder - yes, a real country bumpkin in the big city.

I don't think I would shop there even if I lived closer. Too big, too congested and too many things to choose from.

Give me the small independent corner store over the big box store any day.
